Luminae Volume 1 Mike TRN Kennedy Bengal 9780991332465 Books

A creature (of the "draconic type") and its soldiers attack some slender young women. Apparently the creature wants Luminae. Well, who wouldn't want a woman who glows like a halogen bulb? Unfortunately, I never quite grasped the importance of Luminae or, for that matter, the meaning of the story. I think this is what's known as "high concept" which is a fancy way of saying "incomprehensible."

The artistic style is interesting. It's a stylish style, no doubt about it. In fact, the art is sometimes striking. The story, on the other hand, is largely incomprehensible. Several pages will go by at a stretch with no text or dialog, which I would ordinarily applaud -- graphics should tell much of the story in a graphic novel -- but I was often lost, trying to understand what the pretty pictures were trying to convey apart from the battles galore. When text does appear, much of it might as well be gibberish for all the sense it makes. Maybe it makes more sense in French, but I doubt it.

The lettering is in all caps, the convention for comics, yet every I is dotted. I guess that's part of the high concept, but it makes the dialog more difficult to read. Maybe that wouldn't bother me so much if I were reading something that made sense. The writing gets 1 star, the art gets 5, resulting in a compromise verdict of 3 stars.

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog [...]Having read and appreciated Bengal's collaborations with Morvan, I was curious to see how he handled writing duty on his own stories. In one respect, we have an interesting fantasy story with enough fan service to keep male readers happy. But on the other hand, the story is choppy, the dialogue lacking nuance, and the pace of the story oddly disjointed. Luminae is not a bad graphic novel by any means but it also didn't live up to the promise in Naja, either. I think I missed Morvan's twists and turns the most.

Story Six young string bikini clad warrior women guard Luminae, a mysterious goddess of light. They have lost track of one of their sisters and need to find her - something bad is occurring in the world and it looks like a dragonmage has found his way into their realm. The girls will have to fight the dragonmage while still protecting Luminae - but they are weakened in their search for their missing companion and the dragonmage has planned his attack just as they are most vulnerable.

Bengal's artwork is quite lovely and the manga influence is definitely pronounced here. I had to roll my eyes a bit at all the 'butt perspective' shots of the girls and enough crazy angles to ensure the readers gets a full 3D view of their string bikini glory. But the color palette is pleasing and there are worse things to do than look at beautifully drawn (if objectified to the nth degree) young women.

The story and especially dialogue really didn't work for me. Some plot points would have been much better condensed and others expounded more upon. Once the book ended, I did understand the story arc but the book plot does start out quite wide before narrowing. And I couldn't help wondering about the translation strength if this was originally French (or the rather bland and blunt English). To have such an intricately drawn high fantasy world and then have the characters talking like a sixth grade learn English textbook was disconcerting. It pulled me out of the fantasy world.

In all, beautifully drawn but I'm left wishing for more story and better dialogue. Perhaps I was spoiled from having read Bengal's collaborations with Morvan first.

Reviewed from an ARC.
A primitive village are on the lookout for monsters and a straying member of the Luminae, female powered warriors, has appeared in their vicinity. The other Lumina are attacked by demons and there is also a dragon-mage involved who is very powerful.

Battles ensue with lasting damage to some of the characters and one of the Luminae dies to be replaced by her successor.

The artwork is not clear all the time about who is who nor what is happening. The use of colour/shading made it difficult to admire the artwork in places. The lettering in the digital edition, read using Adobe Digital Editions, was very small.

Suitably engaging, this ends with the promise of more to come. I was quite impressed.
'Luminae Volume 1' features Bengal doing art as well as writing duties this time around. I've liked Bengal's art on 'Naja' and 'Meka.' The art here is good, but the story left me confused.

It's a volume 1, but I felt dropped in the middle of a story and trying to catch up. There are some humanoid characters that look like they have dog noses. There is a group of soldiers hunting something. There is also a curious group of women who are out to protect Luminae, whomever she turns out to be. And there are the strange demonic looking creatures out to destroy, well, everything. It all coalesces in battles, redemption, and, for me, confusion.

I liked the art. I think Bengal's work is interesting. It's not always the most coherent, but the style is original. Here the story finally makes some sense in the last few final pages, but by then, it's too late. More backstory would have been good. Less confusing plot elements might have made things clearer. It includes one of the more beautiful art galleries I've seen in a book with character renderings by other artists that are gorgeous. The art alone is worth 4 stars, but the story, unfortunately, drags this one down for me.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Magnetic Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
