I read this book for the first time in JR.High school and it resonated with the culture I was raised in.The 1940's with the return of men from war and the growth of the U.S. in manufacturing and wealth was the direct result of the quality of character in the preceding generations that Altsheler had been exposed to in his time. That condition has declined over the years. This story is set at a different time but shows the condition and the development of a peopleThe story teller doesn't fail to point out the current problems with those who gave place to the baser nature and the problems caused by callous and careless people who focused on self .The two boys in the train who had been raised in a different environment .In another place and there loss of family and the one who is suffering a life threating illness. There nature had been impacted by things that instilled honor ,faith, hard work, self reliance, perseverance, and love of family. The story is set in wagon train that comes under attack and there being a survivor thanks to a person who planed the attack but was instrumental in there preservation because of the things he saw in there daily life.
Over the years I have shared this book with family and my students that I hoped that it would inspire to develop as a person of quality with some wonderful results . I loaned it out 10 years ago to a person who didn't return it so I went on line to search for it and to my surprise I found it and bought it and read it again.

A nice bok for light reading on vacation. The struggle of two boys making for California and end up finding a life in the wilderness. Witness to the battle of little big horn but return to their new found home in the Rockies.
This a very good book to read to children. 9 and up would enjoy it alot. As would they all Altsheler's works. I highly recommend this to you.
Takes awhile to get to the battle. That's over quickly the story is really 2 boys surviving and developing in the wilderness very beautiful description .
I first read this book when I was 16 years old. Once I started, I could not put it down. 50 years later, I read it again. Again, I could not put it down. A really fine read for young and old alike.
Bittersweet but enjoyable. A way of life that was coming to an end, recounted quite well
