It's been so long since I bought this I have no idea where it is. LOL. The characters are always endearing and funny, and the art isn't as pretty as the anime, but still enjoyable.

GRAVITATION is the story of Shuichi Shindou, high school senior and aspiring musician, whose talent and self-worth become completely hung up on his infatuation with the mean-and-nasty romance novelist who insulted his lyrics. The plot follows Schuichi's pursuit of the novelist, his insane musical career, and the way the two affect each other; veering from side-spitting comedy to gut-wrenching drama and back again without batting an eyelash. There are dozens of characters, a confusing array of interlocking subplots, the author admits she is making it up as she goes along, and the story always seems on the verge of running completely out of control. Yet somehow it all ties together triumphantly in the final volume. Despite being extremely funny/silly/insane, it is also a story with substance, strong characters, and a meaningful payoff.

There are a few difficulties I should warn you about. Many of the characters are frustratingly hard to tell apart, and Shuichi keeps changing his darn hair, which can make it hard to find him in the mega-cast. The art often makes it hard to decipher what is going on, or who is doing what. The musical industry machinations are particularly hard to keep track off without a scorecard. MEANING that if you are so eager to find out what happens next that you barrel through the story (like I did) you will miss half the plot. So do yourself a favor and buy the books two or three at a time, and pace yourself. Or at least make note of everyone's names The character list at the beginning of each volume just covers a few of the major players, and is completely inadequate to the task of helping you figure out what is going on. The art improves greatly as the series progresses, so re-reading Book 1 immediately after putting down Book 12 (which I did three times consecutively) requires a brief period of adjustment.

It is a series that takes a little effort, but in the long run I found this to be a part of its charm, and it is definitely worth it. The series earns its 16+ rating mostly through serious adult themes, frank (but not graphic) sexual content, violence, irresponsible use of firearms, and the potty mouths of youth.
I actually started off watching the Gravitation anime first and then moved on to the books. And I'm kind of glad that I did. The music from the show was GREAT but the manga is SO much better. I think I would've been let down by the show if I'd gotten to it second. That being said, I will now discuss volume 1 of the Gravi manga.
I'm guessing most people already know the story. Shuichi is a high school student/budding musician. He's busy scraping his way into the music business when he runs into Yuki Eiri in the park one night. Yuki trashes Shuichi's lyrics sending Shuichi into hysterics. There begins our romance. Of course there is a lot more going on in book one but I'm sure others have gone into it plenty.
Problems first I agree that the art is not great. It's not horrible. I've certainly seen worse but it's not very good either. It's kind of busy and Murakami even says that there are problems with it. I can only agree. It also has a sort of late 80s-early 90s feel (as does the slang) which can be a little distracting. My last gripe is a minor one. The names. Shuichi is the main character and singer for Bad Luck. Ryuichi is his idol and the singer for Nittle Grasper. Shuichi's friend is Hiroshi Nakano, the guitarist for Bad Luck. Their manager is named Sakano. Are you seeing a pattern here? Then of course we have Shuichi's sister Maiko, and Yuki's sister Mika. It's a little annoying.
HOWEVER I overlook the problems because Gravitation is probably one of the most entertaining stories I've read. The plot starts off relatively realistically with some great over the top funny moments. Shuichi tends to have explosive nosebleeds, gets googly puppy dog eyes, and flips out on a regular basis. I love Shuichi and his spastic enthusiasm for everything. I have to say I wasn't so fond of Yuki at first in the manga. He is really harsh but he quickly became endearing too. And I loved the extra time spent with Shuichi's sister Maiko and Hiro. I'm actually sad that Maiko all but disappears later in the series. She was one of the better characters. All in all the start of the Gravitation series was highly entertaining and had some really great moments. Even some great serious moments. I've read all the books that I've collected from the series at least two or three times each. To me they're definitely worth the money. Especially books 1-4.
This is probably my favorite of the shonen-ai/yaoi mangas that are out. It has a sweet drawing style and a good storyline, and I really like several of the characters (Hiroshi, ryuichi...ect.)

I love Murakami's work. Fan of the anime too. Don't suggest either for children due to the sexual content though.
