I have had this book on my TBR list for a long time and I am thrilled to say it surpassed my high expectations. While not perfect, this book is wildly entertaining and whisks you away to a fascinating time period, the Roaring 20s, where you become intimately acquainted with cabaret singers, flappers, mobsters and their friends. Hannah is certainly extremely flawed and at times annoying, but she is very young so this seems authentic and she makes certain mistakes and decisions that one who is young and alone in the world would make. I probably shouldn't say this, it's probably very un PC, but I LOVED Johnny Gallo. So much. Probably too much. He is a ruthless mobster, so he does some very questionable things which I can't defend...BUT God did he love Hannah. It was never in question, ever. He loved her above and beyond anything and everything and at times I found myself frustrated that Hannah didn't appreciate his devotion enough. But she was always striving for freedom and independence which as a woman in today's world, I probably take for granted a bit, so while reading this, try not to judge these characters through modern day eyes, but rather think of what it was like to be a young woman nearly 100 years ago when the book is set.

I was enthralled by the world Brentwood created in this novel and fell in love with the characters. They each had a clear voice and motivations and even when they did things I disagreed with, they kept true to themselves. The author takes many chances in this book and they paid off b/c she produced something special and different than so much that is out right now. I can't wait to read more by Anna Brentwood and hope she sticks to this time period b/c I can't get enough of it.

The Songbird with Sapphire Eyes was truly an escape to the days of prohibition and gangsters. Anna Brentwood's writing gave me a great escape into to that period of time. The book left such a lasting impression that I could not stop thinking about it for many days after I finished it. The story captured my attention right away and I could not stop reading it. The characters were wonderful and were so real. Reading the book piqued my interest in the early days of the 20th century and how women were perceived and treated. The author truthfully captured what women had to endure back in that period in time. Brentwood's story made me grateful to live in this generation. I hope she writes a sequel to this book!
I just finished reading The Songbird with Sapphire Eyes and just loved everything about the book. Anna Brentwood's character development kept me passionately interested in Hannah, Meg, Johnny and the rest of the characters and made me feel that I was a part of their lives. From the first page I was hooked on the story and couldn't wait to get home from work everyday so I can read what was happening next. I was sad when I finished the book and I am impatiently waiting for the sequel. This book is a "must read"!
Anna Brentwood's characters are filled with a depth of expression and a capacity to love that is only found when human beings have experienced life's joys and sorrows. That is to say that no writer can create characters that are this rich and textured without having a keen sense of awareness, feeling, empathy, and a skilled study of human nature. Ms. Brentwood certainly has been viewing life's truths and bearing witness life's human drama more than most people do. She may be a first time author but I am sure this is just the beginning. Well done!

As a reader, I was transported to the times that my grandparents lived through. I could use all of my sensory perceptions to feel, smell, taste and touch each character's journey. I was cleverly allowed to follow the pathways and choices of three women who bared their truths, asking us to be witnesses to their lives. The prohibition era and it's vast textures with multi-layered details kept me turning pages as the story unfurled in the breeze. I was happy to hitch a ride to Hannah, the Songbird's star. This book is witty, compelling, and contains the unvarnished truth about life, love, and being human beings. WELL WORTH A READ!!

This was a great book! I prefer to read history from the 1800's, so this story was different. 1920, wow women were coming alive. When Hannah runs away, she heads to Kansas City just hoping her friend still lived there. She was only 14 or 15. I can't imagine doing that on my own. But they made it mainly through prostitution and it was an accepted way of life. She hooks up with Johnny who owns her. The story kind of reads like Bonnie and Clyde and mobsters. Lots of action. There were some funny sayings that I need to look up. 'Bee's Knees' is one of them. I'm ready for part 2 to come out. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Although I felt the ending was very abrupt, this was a good novel. I'm a sucker for any historical fiction novel so I immediately picked this up. Set in the roaring '20s this novel is not complete without mention of the roaring 20s culture- the glamour, slang, dress, music and of course- the gangsters. At the base of the novel is one we've might have read (or watched in a movie) about a naive girl who at the heart of the novel- just want to sing. Running away from home at a very young age fueled by a tramatic incident, our protagonists gets a makeover in appearance and in life. Quickly ingulfed in the lifestyle of a 20s flapper (full of partying, drinking and men) she is introduced to her lover, and later prison warden. I hate to give away too much of the plot but I was slightly off put by the ending. Sure I could deduce what was going to happen as the novel progress but I felt the ending came out of nowhere and was still left unresolved. Overall this was a great novel and I felt like I was in the 20s living it up.
