I was immediately lured into Tess's world, mainly the blend of her strength and humor. I would've followed her anywhere, but I really became intrigued by the deepening magical realism and modernized folklore she encounters. The pace of this book is blistering, and I found myself reading it every chance I got for three days. There was an odd change of character perspective as the book raced toward climax, but I soon gathered why this had to be, and the switch didn't slow me. All I could say at the end is, "Well, I hope Willson's busy working on the sequel." I can't wait to read on!Tags : A Keeper's Truth (Volume 1) [Dee Willson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Every one of us has a soul. What a moving book, from the first page to the last. A Keeper’s Truth is the story of Tess Morgan, her life has seen more then its share of pain and misery, from her neglected childhood to her early widowhood, Tess knows sorrow. As she begins to peak out from under the shroud of mourning, life is waiting for her. But world turns out to be much scarier than she ever realized as she learns that she is part of a force as old as the world itself.
I thought this was going to be a fairly standard second chance romance, but it was so much more. The friendship with Thomas, the rivalry with Bryce, the Keepers and lost souls, just an amazing menagerie.
Luckily this is the first in a series, unfortunately I have no idea when book 2 is released, but I will be thrilled to continue this journey.

A Keeper’s Truth by Dee Willson is rich with mythology, making it more than just a story but a look into some interesting and incredible snippets of old folklore. What I thought could be a rehashing of pop-culture-influenced glittering vampires or clichéd witch hunts was actually a really unique origin story with modern influences and a fresh breath of air.
The lore was by far my favourite part of the book. Willson must have done some heavy research to come up with some of these elements and they are really, really cool. There were mentions of theoretical places (or not, depending who you ask) and almost magical stories about the existence of mankind that I had never come across before. It added a much deeper level to the story and I am so interested in where Willson found the inspiration for all of this.
The core of the story itself is a formula we are familiar with; a newly widowed woman, Tess, starts seeing strange visions, meets a dark and handsome stranger and starts to question her otherwise normal life and the truths she always thought she knew. While the base is familiar, the story is layered with the aforementioned lore and the reader is kept on the outskirts of what is actually happening for a good portion of the book. It moves quickly, but isn’t easy to piece everything together, and we learn more and more about the characters and their histories as the book goes on.
I was a little torn on how I felt about Tess; she was a great mother and a grieving widow, but she was a mess. I don’t hold that against her; its understandable being in the position she was, having just lost her husband and not knowing how to go on without him. But her back and forth between Bryce (the mysterious stranger) and Thomas (her longtime confidant) or whether she even was ready to be with anyone kind of drove me crazy at times. This behaviour secured a love triangle which often rubs me the wrong way, but at least in this case it was a lot deeper than it appeared and was intertwined again with more lore that set it apart from what you would typically expect from the situation.
That said, I really liked the relationship between Bryce and Thomas. At first I thought it might be annoying, but there were good grounds for the actions and reactions and it wasn’t just simple jealousy or something that existed just to add a sense of drama to the story. They created an interesting dynamic and while there was a bit of back and forth between guys, this didn’t totally dominate the whole story and that I can appreciate. It all ends up making sense as the story goes on.
I liked how this all came together in the end. The supernatural elements weren’t super shocking or off the wall to throw the story off kilter and they blended quite well with an otherwise normal-ish modern story. There is a lot more to who all these people are and this first book only just touches on it. I can’t wait to see where Willson takes us with this. Like I said, the lore and the story is so well crafted; I can’t wait to read more of it.

I'm trying to figure out where to start for this review. The folklore spun through this story is exquisitely researched and the authenticity of it (especially the souls, mermaids and rare fae) just made the story so much better and drew me in so much deeper. I've never been a widow, though I've lost loved ones, and I have family members with mental illness. Dee portrayed life with someone that has untreated bipolar perfectly without making it traumatic, including the way because of her mother, Tess questions her own sanity when her nightmares and visions start. How else do you explain seeing people that nobody else can? The grief, the pain and everything that Tess (and her daughter) go through even months after losing Meyer is so real that I teared up several times. Thomas was so well portrayed I could picture him, Sofia, Mrs Marples, Grams and Gramps. Bryce was a good foil to Tess, knowing so much but yet trying to let her come into everything herself, even while being her white knight to protect her from aspects of her life she didn't even know about yet. Ms. Willson grabbed my attention with the reborn souls, kept tightening it (especially with those magazine article excerpts as chapter headers) and didn't let go even after I ran out of words to read. I will be waiting on book two and plan to read her quirky ghost story coming out too.
From page one I was hooked. Not only was this a well written book, it kept me interested and wanting more as I ended every chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author incorporated ancient mythology into a modern day story that takes place in a town which could very well be the one you live in, with the main character, Tess, as one of your neighbors. The author did a fabulous job bringing her characters to life, and between that and the mythology, I didn’t want the story to end.
I highly suggest you read this book. Like me, you will be begging the author for more. I can't wait for book number two!
This beautifully written novel will be of particular interest to those who find themselves curious about the paranormal. It is obvious that the author, Dee Willson spent much time on research and it shows in her references. The main character Tess becomes a grieving widow and much to her surprise her entire world turns weird. She is completely unaware of the danger around her until her knight in shining armor opens a part of life that she herself is not aware of. This book will leave you wondering about our very existence on earth. Just a great read.
